With therefore much curiosity about how social networks work, one begins to wonder if there is advertising potential within these social networks?
I have been seeing social network for some time now. In fact I’m an associate of numerous social networking websites including https://www.linkedin.com and http://www.myspace.com/ just to name two.
I joined partly because I wanted to see what they were, but more to the point to see on SEM what influence social network could have in the coming years.
I’ve been a part of numerous ser-vices for quite a while and the reach these sites have is extraordinary.
For example, from my LinkedIn network of eight people I have an expanded network of over 12,600 people.
That is amazing – I am merely a click or two away from close to 13,000 others who share my similar interests ranging from what I like to watch o-n TV to work I can give for them.
Through my connections and their connections, I’m related to people including the American Cancer Society, to Sun Microsystems to the University of Texas to Google.
But what marketing opportunities are there for Social Networking?
Well, let us examine MySpace.
MySpace is one of many top sites on the net today. I-t racked up 9.4 billion page-views in August 2005 (more than Google) and new users are signing up in a mind-boggling rate of 3.5 million a month.
MySpace is typical of where todays 18-30 year old would go to manage their digital life. It allows users to post photographs of themselves and their friends, create a website, list their favorite artists, view and share videos, suggest things to do and lists a set of people they consider friends. It’s on this ‘Friends List’ where most of the possibilities lie.
All forty million-plus users of MySpace have a friends page that lists people that person thinks their friend. This is a set of people that they’re interested in conversing with and about, along with reading from on a normal basis. Once you add someone as your friend they can send you emails, discuss your photographs, read your blogs, as well as leave messages that you can then tell the others. This really is an opportunity for instant feedback about you.
The capability to include friends to your site is important for marketing to MySpace consumers. In accordance with Courtney Holt, head of new media and strategic marketing at Interscope Records, ‘This generation is growing up without having ever seen programmed media. ‘They do not think in terms of the record, and they don’t think in terms of a TV schedule. They think when it comes to TiVo, P2P, AOL, and obviously MySpace. Browse here at the link www.linkedin.com/in/neilcamenker/ to learn the purpose of it.
You can see how this could grow.
Let us say you produce a MySpace account to speak about your service or product. You weblog about any of it and search for others that will share your interests.
You then invite them to be your friend. If they turn into a friend you begin your ‘gentle sell’ begging your product to them. To discover more, please check-out: tumbshots.
As they grow to appreciate it, they begin blogging and sharing it. Quickly thousands or even thousand of individuals are talking about you and your product or service.
Don’t think this will work?
I’d like to give you a few examples. There are many companies who’ve gotten their begin MySpace. Simply by hosting some of their music on the web and blogging about themselves they developed a following. Soon they had document deals and contracts lined-up.
Of course to use services like MySpace you need to have something this target audience needs. If you do not then you probably should not put an excessive amount of effort in-to MySpace.
But that does not mean other social networking opportunities ought to be ignored. Linked-in is more of a professional introduction service, as i mentioned above. If your product or service meets here then by all means examine it further.
And there are the others also. Services including Yahoo!s MyWeb, Flickr, http://del.icio.us and more.
